NDLEA ARRESTS NONAGENARIAN, PHYSICIAN IN ILLICIT DRUG CRACKDOWN
Nigeria’s intensifying campaign against illicit drug trafficking is revealing an unsettling truth that the country’s narcotics economy cuts across age, class and profession.
In a series of coordinated operations, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a diverse group of suspects, including a 93-year-old great grandfather and a 69-year-old medical doctor, an indication of how deeply embedded the drug trade has become in everyday society.
In Abia State, operatives apprehended Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, a nonagenarian, allegedly in possession of 7.7 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis. In Ogun State, authorities arrested Dr. Chudi Daniel Ofomata, a practicing medical professional, found with controlled substances including promazepam and promethazine.
At Kano airport, NDLEA officials intercepted an Ivorian national, Gohouri Michael, carrying 1.49 kilograms of cocaine, underscoring the transnational dimension of the trade.
Beyond these arrests, enforcement efforts extended to multiple states. In Niger State, a couple was detained with a staggering 118 kilograms of skunk, while additional seizures and arrests were recorded in Lagos, Imo, Borno and Edo states. The pattern suggests not isolated incidents but a broad and decentralized network of distribution.
