World Drowning Prevention Day Celebration Holds On 25th July 2024 At Mission To Seafarers Centre, 29 Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos
The Chief of the Nigeria Marine Coastguard Volunteer Service (NMCGVS), Captain Isaac O. Adamolekun, has announced that the World Drowning Prevention Day celebration will be held on 25th July 2024 at the Mission to Seafarers Centre, 29 Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos, commencing at 11 am.
In anticipation of this significant event, there is an imperative need to raise awareness about essential safety measures and procedures that are critical for life preservation, especially during the peak of the rainy season in Nigeria. This global celebration seeks to underscore the importance of recognizing drowning as a pressing public health issue, reinforcing the message that while anyone can drown, no one should. The human, social, and economic toll of drowning incidents is intolerably high and entirely preventable.
The World Drowning Prevention Day serves as a poignant reminder of the necessity for safety measures in areas where individuals are exposed to water, such as swimming areas, natural water bodies, and flood-prone regions. Disseminating this crucial knowledge within homes, schools, and workplaces is of paramount importance.
This event will also provide a platform for key government establishments, corporate entities, and other organizations to collaborate with the NMCGVS through endorsements and partnerships. The goal is to foster nationwide awareness and drastically reduce the incidence of drowning accidents.
The personnel of NMCGVS undergo an intensive six-month professional training program in partnership with the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos. Their rigorous training includes regimented seaborne rescue swimming, equipping them for national assignments focused on preventing and responding to drowning incidents.
The NMCGVS stands as a dedicated seaborne para-military humanitarian organization committed to the prevention of drowning and serving as first responders in rescue operations across the nation. Their mission is to safeguard lives and mitigate the devastating impact of drowning.
As we approach World Drowning Prevention Day, let us unite in our efforts to promote safety and awareness, ensuring that the risk of drowning is minimized and our communities are better protected.
