De-Genius Academy Celebrates African Heritage With Swallow Day

By Ezinne Jennifer Nwosu

De-Genius Academy in Ikorodu observed Swallow Day on Monday, September 25th, 2025, bringing students together to experience the richness of African cuisine. The event underscored the role of traditional meals in education, culture and nutrition.

Students were served a wide range of local staples such as Eba, Pounded Yam, Wheat and Semovita, paired with classic soups including Egusi, Okra, Vegetable and Ewedu. The program was designed to show that these foods are not only cultural symbols but also valuable sources of nourishment, providing the vitamins and minerals needed for healthy living.

The academy also used the occasion to address misconceptions about swallows, encouraging students to view them as meals of pride rather than outdated traditions. Practical sessions on meal preparation and proper eating etiquette added a hands-on dimension, allowing students to connect with their heritage in a meaningful way.

Swallow Day ultimately served as both a cultural and educational exercise, strengthening the appreciation of African food traditions while teaching their lasting relevance in modern society.
