NIGERIA BREAKS RECORDS, BUT WHO IS PAYING ATTENTION?
By Ezinne Jennifer Nwosu
On 7th September 2025, Lagos witnessed history at the Silverbird Galleria. For five straight days, the city buzzed with excitement as Shehu Bamidele embarked on an extraordinary Guinness World Record attempt.
The challenge? Playing 8-ball pool for 120 consecutive hours.
Shehu didn’t just break the record of 111 hours; he crushed it, surpassing even his own earlier mark of 112 hours. Supporters described his feat as “indefatigable and superhuman,” as he pushed his body and mind to the limit while still showcasing true pool mastery.
When the final hour struck, the crowd erupted in celebration. For Shehu, the record was not just a personal win, but a victory for Nigeria. A statement that our country can shine on the world stage in sports, leisure and entertainment.
Yet, despite this remarkable triumph, one question lingers…
Why hasn’t Guinness World Records given Shehu the same global spotlight others, like Hilda Baci, received?
It’s time we recognize and celebrate our own. Shehu’s achievement is proof of Nigeria’s untapped potential in sports tourism, recreation and entertainment but without proper recognition, such feats risk being forgotten.
Big kudos to Poolfest Naija, Globus Bank and other sponsors whose partnership made this milestone possible. Together, they’ve shown how corporate and cultural collaboration can create world-class events right here in Nigeria.
Let’s give Shehu the flowers he deserves.
