WELLBECK ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION LIMITED DRIVES SECURITY, SUSTAINABILITY IN LAGOS

At a time when cities across Nigeria grapple with power shortages and security concerns, a Lagos-based independent power producer, Wellbeck Electricity Distribution Limited, is quietly rewriting the narrative of corporate social responsibility. The company’s recent donation of 20 solar-powered streetlights, a traffic control booth and reflective vests to the Nigeria Police Force and LASTMA in Surulere speaks volumes about the role of private enterprise in building safer and more sustainable communities.
The newly illuminated Stadium Under-Bridge in Surulere, once known for its dim, unsafe corners now stands as a symbol of corporate partnership and proactive urban renewal. For Wellbeck Electricity Distribution Limited’s Managing Director/CEO, Afolabi Aiyela, the gesture goes beyond philanthropy; it is a demonstration of the transformative power of renewable energy. For the Aiyela, Solar lighting represents resilience and sustainability. It provides visibility, safety and community comfort without dependence on the grid.He added that the initiative followed a call from Hon. Desmond Olusola Elliott, member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere 1.
Elliott, who has consistently advocated for community-driven development, praised the project for addressing a long-standing security challenge in his constituency. He noted that poor street lighting had encouraged criminal activity and reduced nighttime commercial activity. According to him, Public safety requires partnership . He said that the Government cannot do it alone and the intervention by Wellbeck Electricity shows how private firms can complement public initiatives to secure lives and livelihoods.
The event drew notable figures, including Lagos State Commissioner for Power, Hon. Abiodun Ogunleye, who commended both the donor and the community for aligning with the state’s vision of renewable energy expansion. He emphasized Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader energy plan, which includes the rollout of 40,000 solar-powered lights across Lagos to foster cleaner, safer and smarter public spaces.
Beyond the symbolism of bright lights, Wellbeck’s action represents a shift toward purposeful CSR. One that merges environmental consciousness with social impact. The company’s promise to maintain the solar installations and its call for residents to guard them against vandalism underscores a key message. Development thrives where there is shared responsibility.
In a city that never sleeps, light is more than illumination. It is security, opportunity and progress. With this initiative, Wellbeck Electricity Distribution Limited has not only brightened the streets of Surulere but has also illuminated the path for corporate Nigeria to follow.
