OGUN STATE POLICE TARGET FAKE NUMBER PLATES TO CURB CRIME, IMPROVE SAFETY

The Ogun State Police Command has intensified enforcement against vehicles operating with illegal number plates, the misuse of dealer or temporary plates and the unauthorised use of sirens and amber lights, as part of a statewide effort to curb crime, improve road safety and protect lives.

The operation focuses on vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid, or improperly affixed plates; violations police say are frequently linked to criminal activity and pose serious threats to public safety.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Command said the initiative is intelligence-led and based on credible information. The statement noted that offenders are being identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws, while the enforcement effort is designed to proactively disrupt criminal operations and reduce the anonymity often exploited by criminals on the roads.

To ensure professionalism and accountability, specialised units including the Motor Traffic Department, Monitoring Unit and X-Squad have been deployed for oversight, with Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers supervising operations across their jurisdictions.

The Commissioner of Police urged public cooperation, compliance with traffic regulations and the use of recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points, reassuring residents that the exercise is aimed at preventing crime and maintaining public order while respecting citizens’ rightsand encouraging reports through the Gateway Shield toll-free line 0800 000 9111 and emergency numbers 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369, and 0708 497 2994.
