NAPTIP CRACKS DOWN ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN ONITSHA, UNCOVERS BABY TRADE NETWORK

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on human trafficking with a major raid on a popular hotel in the 33 Area of Onitsha, Anambra State, rescuing 17 victims and arresting four suspected traffickers.

In a statement signed by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Vincent Adekoye, the agency confirmed that the operation, carried out with military support, also led to the arrest of two additional suspects linked to the illegal buying and selling of babies across the South East.
Investigations revealed that the victims, many of them underage, were trafficked from Benue, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states and forced into prostitution. Residents had earlier raised concerns about suspicious activities at the hotel, which reportedly housed dozens of rooms frequently visited by men seeking the girls.

NAPTIP disclosed that four of the rescued victims tested positive for HIV and are now receiving counseling and medical support with assistance from the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency.
The agency’s Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, expressed deep concern over the victims’ health and welfare, commending security forces and local response teams for their swift collaboration. She also confirmed that the hotel owner has been invited for questioning, while a manhunt is underway for the main trafficker, commonly referred to as the “Madam.”

NAPTIP reaffirmed its commitment to making 2026 a tough year for traffickers, warning that intensified operations will continue across the country.
