The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded a series of significant arrests and drug seizures across Nigeria, including the apprehension of a 74-year-old man, Ikwuakalom Nwakoro Emeka, at the Abuja airport with 11 kilograms of cocaine ingeniously concealed in balloons.
Emeka, who claimed he was travelling to London on vacation, was intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while attempting to board a British Airways flight. According to officials, the illicit substance was carefully hidden inside food items, including ground dry pepper, wrapped in foil papers and balloons in a bid to evade detection.
In Lagos, NDLEA operatives also carried out major seizures at the Apapa seaport, where suspects were arrested and large consignments of opioids recovered. The haul included 68,000 pills of tramadol (225mg) and 339,800 bottles of codeine-based syrup.
Further operations across Edo, Kano, and Abuja led to additional arrests and seizures of various narcotics, including skunk, pentazocine injections and cannabis.
The Chairman of the NDLEA commended officers involved in the operations, praising their continued commitment to both drug supply reduction and demand reduction efforts across the country.
