In response to the growing sophistication of online fraud and digital deception, the Ogun State Police Command has introduced a public awareness campaign designed to alert citizens to the realities of cybercrime and the need for stronger personal vigilance online. The initiative, titled “Real Odogwu No Dey Hide Face,” is part of a nationwide program coordinated by the Nigeria Police Force – National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and launched under the authority of the Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Inspector General of Police. The campaign was formally presented during a ceremony where the Director of the Centre, CP Ifeanyi Uche Henry, represented the Inspector General, emphasizing the urgency of addressing crimes that now transcend geographical boundaries.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Command noted that the campaign seeks to raise awareness about the increasingly complex landscape of cyber threats confronting Nigerians. According to the statement, the initiative will educate members of the public about common schemes such as identity theft, romance scams, phishing attempts and business email compromise, all of which have grown more prevalent as economic and social activity moves online.
Officials say the awareness effort will be visible across the state through strategically placed campaign banners and public messaging intended to remind citizens that their digital identities require the same level of protection as their physical possessions. The campaign encourages Nigerians to adopt basic but critical cybersecurity practices, including protecting confidential financial information such as ATM PINs, one-time passwords (OTPs) and bank verification numbers (BVNs), while also enabling multi-factor authentication on digital accounts.
The initiative reflects a broader effort by the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen public cooperation in the fight against cybercrime. By emphasizing awareness and prevention, police authorities hope to reduce the vulnerability of individuals and businesses to online fraud while building a culture of responsible digital behavior.
