YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH TOURISM,: BASHIR'S PLAN FOR LAGOS

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH TOURISM: BASHIR'S PLAN FOR LAGOS

In every community, a moment arrives when the people begin to look for leadership that not only understands their challenges but shares in their aspirations for progress. For many in Lagos State, Oluwadamilare Sonayon Adebowale Bashir represents a rising voice shaped by that very understanding. One rooted in youthful energy, social awareness and a clear vision of how opportunity can be expanded for the next generation.

Bashir believes that leadership must go beyond rhetoric. For him, representation is defined by the ability to translate the everyday concerns of citizens into policies and programs that improve lives. As a young leader with a growing presence in public discourse, he carries a perspective shaped by firsthand awareness of the challenges many young people face; limited employment opportunities, inadequate access to skills development and a lack of structured pathways for self-advancement.
That perspective has helped shape one of the core pillars of his thinking. Youth empowerment through economic opportunity, particularly in sectors that have the potential to absorb talent, creativity and entrepreneurial ambition. Among those sectors, Bashir sees tourism as one of the most powerful yet underutilized engines of growth for Lagos State.

To him, tourism is more than a leisure industry. It is a gateway to job creation, cultural preservation and youth capacity building. Lagos, with its rich cultural heritage, dynamic arts scene, coastal geography and vibrant urban life, already possesses the ingredients of a global tourism destination. Bashir’s vision is to help elevate that potential into a structured economic ecosystem capable of generating income for the state while opening doors for young people seeking meaningful livelihoods.

In his outlook, developing Lagos as a major tourism hub means investing in heritage sites, promoting cultural festivals, strengthening the creative economy and encouraging partnerships that support hospitality, entertainment and community-based tourism enterprises. Such efforts, he argues, could unlock thousands of employment opportunities across sectors ranging from media production and tour services to hospitality management, cultural exhibitions and digital storytelling.

For Bashir, the real impact of tourism lies in its' ability to empower young people not just as workers, but as creators and entrepreneurs. He envisions training platforms that equip youths with skills in tourism management, digital marketing, cultural preservation, event organization and hospitality services as areas where young innovators can build businesses and contribute to the state’s economy.

His focus on capacity building stems from a clear understanding that many youths possess ambition and creativity but often lack the resources or structured support systems needed to turn ideas into sustainable ventures. As someone who belongs to the same generation navigating these constraints, Bashir believes policy direction must prioritize long-term empowerment rather than temporary solutions.

In conversations about social development, he frequently returns to the simple principle of empowered youth strengthen communities. When young people are given access to training, mentorship and economic opportunities, they become contributors to growth rather than spectators in their own society.

Tourism, in his view, can serve as a bridge between culture, commerce and youth opportunity. By showcasing Lagos’ traditions, history, arts and urban vibrancy to the world, the state can simultaneously strengthen its' identity and expand its' economic reach. The result would be a cycle of development where cultural pride fuels tourism, tourism generates revenue and that revenue translates into new opportunities for young people.

Bashir’s rising voice reflects a generation increasingly determined to participate in shaping the future of governance and development. With a vision that connects youth empowerment to economic innovation, he represents a perspective that sees Lagos not only as a bustling metropolis but as a global cultural destination powered by the creativity and resilience of its young people.

In that vision, tourism becomes more than an industry; it becomes a platform for employment, entrepreneurship and hope, offering young Lagosians the chance to transform their talents into meaningful livelihoods while contributing to the growth and global reputation of their state.
