NDLEA BUSTS LAGOS DRUG WAREHOUSES, SEIZES N16.9 BILLION IN OPIOIDS

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has delivered one of its' most significant blows to the pharmaceutical black market, raiding three concealed warehouses in Lagos and recovering opioids valued at nearly N17 billion. The operation, carried out in the Okota axis, underscores a growing pattern of traffickers embedding large-scale drug stockpiles within residential neighborhoods to evade detection.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency disclosed that the intelligence-led operation was executed at multiple locations within Park View Estate, Ago Palace, Okota, leading to the recovery of 2,360,000 pills of high-potency tramadol and 1,909,400 bottles of codeine syrup. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the raid as a decisive disruption of a major drug syndicate and a reflection of the agency’s evolving operational capacity.

The coordinated raids, conducted on April 17th, 2026, uncovered one large warehouse at 98 Olukayode Awofisayo Street and two additional storage points at 5 Charles Ndumetu Street, all within the same residential cluster. In total, operatives recovered 19,094 cartons containing codeine syrup alongside 34 cartons of tramadol 225mg, quantities that point to an industrial-scale distribution network operating beneath the surface of urban life.

Brig. Gen Marwa,  characterized the seizure as a monumental victory, noting that the volume, nearly 4.3 million units of controlled substances, demonstrates both the scale of the illicit trade and the agency’s growing intelligence capabilities.  He said that finding such volumes hidden within residential estates like Park View and busy hubs like Okota shows the desperation of the cartels, he also added that enforcement efforts are increasingly staying several steps ahead of traffickers.

The NDLEA boss also issued a direct warning to drug networks, emphasizing that location or concealment would offer no protection. Whether in upscale estates or remote facilities, he said, the agency remains committed to dismantling supply chains and eroding the financial foundations of trafficking operations. The broader strategy, he suggested, is not only to intercept drugs but to systematically weaken the economic incentives sustaining the trade.
