OGUN POLICE DEBUNK VIRAL BANDITS IN FOREST VIDEO, CALL IT MISLEADING
By Jennifer Nwosu
A viral video claiming to show armed bandits hiding in a forest in Ogun State has been firmly dismissed by police authorities, who say the footage is not only misleading but completely unrelated to Nigeria. The clarification comes amid growing online chatter that had sparked concern among residents.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Command described the video as recycled content deliberately shared with false claims to create panic. According to the statement, preliminary checks revealed that the footage showing individuals in a bush setting was actually recorded in Kenya during an operation involving cattle rustlers and was captured by a General Service Unit (GSU) drone.
Further verification showed the video first surfaced online in 2022 and has now been recirculated with a misleading narrative. Police emphasized that there is no intelligence or operational report indicating the presence of armed bandits in any forest or part of Ogun State.
The State's Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni condemned the spread of unverified content, warning that such misinformation can fuel unnecessary fear and erode public trust. He reassured residents that the Command remains proactive, with ongoing intelligence-led operations and security deployments across the state.
Authorities are urging the public to ignore the video and avoid sharing unverified information, stressing the importance of relying on official communication channels for accurate updates. The Command also warned that spreading false or inciting content will not be tolerated.
