Detectives attached to the Igbesa Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old man, Chidi Ebere, in connection with the killing of a commercial motorcyclist in Igbesa, a community in Ogun State.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, said the incident occurred at about 7 a.m. on April 8th, 2026, when the suspect allegedly posed as a passenger, boarded the motorcycle operated by the victim, Sunday Ogbu, 36 and launched an attack in what investigators believe was an attempt to steal the bike.
According to the police, the attack led to a struggle between the suspect and the rider. A bystander who witnessed the altercation raised an alarm, drawing the attention of officers who responded swiftly to the scene.
The victim was rescued and transported to a medical facility for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.
Police officials said the suspect was apprehended at the scene. The motorcycle and a knife believed to have been used in the attack were recovered and taken into evidence.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where authorities say a more detailed investigation is underway ahead of prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the killing and reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served. He also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity.
