Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 38-year-old man and his 13-year-old son over the unlawful possession of a firearm, underscoring growing concerns about the circulation of illegal weapons and the role of minors in criminal activity.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer,Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the arrests were made on Sunday along the Shagamu–Ogijo Road by officers of the Quick Response Squad during a routine stop and search operation. The teenage suspect was intercepted in a commercial tricycle, where a search reportedly uncovered a locally made pistol, a live cartridge and a mask.
Unable to account for the items, the boy told officers the weapon belonged to his father.
Police subsequently tracked and arrested the father, identified as Joseph Kehinde. Both suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
Authorities say the case remains under investigation, with charges expected upon its conclusion.
The State's Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the alertness of the officers involved and reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance stance on illegal arms possession. He also called on residents to support law enforcement efforts with timely information.
The incident highlights persistent security challenges in the region, particularly the accessibility of improvised weapons and the troubling involvement of underage individuals.
