The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), Lagos State Command, on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, organised a sensitization and awareness programme for students within the Igbo-Owu/Mushin axis of Lagos State as part of ongoing efforts to combat cultism, drug abuse and other social vices among youths.
The programme impacted over 2,000 students drawn from Igbo-Owu Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, Community Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, as well as Euba Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
The initiative focused on educating students on the dangers and consequences of cultism, drug abuse, violence and related social vices, while also promoting discipline, self-worth, responsible conduct and positive decision making among young people.
Speaking during the programme, the Divisional Police Officer, Mushin Division, CSP Ayanwale Ayodeji, enlightened the students on the meaning, dangers and long term implications of cultism and substance abuse. He urged the students to remain vigilant and proactive in their communities by reporting suspicious activities and resisting negative influences.
He emphasized the importance of community responsibility with the charge, “If you see something, say something.”
Also addressing the students, the Deputy Chairman of POCACOV, Ogunyemi Abimbola, encouraged them to uphold good morals and become responsible members of society. He reminded the students that they represent the future of the nation and that the choices they make today will significantly influence their future and the development of Nigeria.
The representative of School Supports and Special Duties, Education District VI, MO Adeniran, also spoke extensively on the dangers of cultism and negative peer influence. Using the term 'Egbon Adugbo' as a practical illustration, he explained how individuals who appear supportive or protective may eventually lure young people into violence, drug abuse and criminal activities.
He advised the students to be careful in choosing their associations and to embrace friendships and influences that encourage academic excellence, discipline and personal growth.
In her remarks, the Lagos State Coordinator of POCACOV, SP Olivia A. Ugochukwu, stressed the importance of resilience and self-confidence in resisting peer pressure. She encouraged the students to understand that the ability to reject harmful behaviour and negative influences reflects strength of character and personal discipline.
The programme concluded with the students pledging to maintain good conduct, avoid social vices and contribute positively to society.
