A suspected cult related clash along Wasimi Ake–Ijemo Agbadu Road,Abeokuta, on Sunday 3rd May, has left one person dead, prompting a swift police response and an ongoing investigation. Authorities have been quick to clarify that the incident, though alarming, was confined to the roadway and nearby streets and not connected to any public event at Ake Palace.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Command emphasized that the clash occurred specifically between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank along Wasimi Ake Road and had no link whatsoever to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration held at Ake Palace. The statement noted that the clarification became necessary to counter misinformation and prevent unnecessary panic.

According to preliminary findings, the clash broke out around 2:45 p.m. between suspected rival groups, with gunshots sending residents scrambling for safety as the individuals fled into adjoining streets. Detectives from Oke Itoku Division responded promptly to distress calls and moved into the area.

At the scene, operatives found a male victim, identified simply as Stone, with critical gunshot injuries. He was rushed in collaboration with emergency responders to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, where he was later confirmed dead. His body has been deposited at the morgue for further examination.

Police say normalcy has since been restored, with increased security presence in the area to prevent any recurrence. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway as investigators pursue leads to identify and apprehend those involved.

Authorities are urging residents to remain calm but alert and to support ongoing efforts by sharing credible information.
