The Nigerian Navy has intensified its' campaign against the illegal exploitation of natural resources, arresting 13 suspects and intercepting two wooden boats laden with bags of illegally mined black sand in Bayelsa State.

The operation, carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO, underscores growing efforts by security agencies to safeguard Nigeria's waterways from criminal activities and environmental violations.
According to military authorities, the successful interception followed credible intelligence indicating that boats transporting illegally mined black sand were moving through communities within the state's coastal axis.

Acting on the intelligence, a team led by the Base Operations Officer, Lt Cdr. U.S. Chukwu, launched a targeted operation on June 14th, 2026. The team intercepted the two wooden boats at Lekeson Community and Liama Community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The vessels were found carrying numerous bags of black sand believed to have been mined illegally. Thirteen crew members aboard the boats were taken into custody during the operation.

Speaking on the development, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Captain S.K. Haruna, reiterated the Base's determination to combat illegal resource exploitation and other maritime crimes within its' area of responsibility.
He noted that the operation reflects the Nigerian Navy's broader commitment to protecting the nation's economic assets, preserving the environment and ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria's waterways in line with its' constitutional mandate.
He stated that The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in its' efforts to deny criminal elements the freedom to operate within the maritime domain while supporting lawful economic activities.

In accordance with established procedures and following directives from the Bayelsa State Government, the intercepted boats, the recovered bags of illegally mined black sand and the 13 suspects were formally handed over on June 15th, 2026, to the Divisional Police Officer of Nembe Division, CSP Gbenekeme Kenneth, at the Government Jetty, Nembe.
Authorities said the suspects will undergo further investigation and may face prosecution if found culpable.
