POLICE CRACKDOWN ON FAKE SECURITY NEWS AS SUSPECT FACES PROSECUTION IN OGUN

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Johnson Elleh for allegedly producing and circulating a viral video that falsely claimed kidnappers and bandits were operating along the Owode-Idiroko axis of the state.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Command said it immediately launched an investigation after the video began making rounds online. According to the statement, thorough checks and verification revealed that the claims contained in the video were entirely false and designed to create unnecessary fear, panic and anxiety among residents.

Police investigations reportedly confirmed that no kidnapping or banditry incident occurred in the area as portrayed in the footage. Detectives subsequently identified and arrested the suspect after discovering that he personally featured in the video.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect deliberately created and shared the false narrative for attention and online engagement.
During questioning, he reportedly confessed to producing and disseminating the content to generate public reaction and social media traction.

The Command described the act as capable of disrupting public peace, causing unnecessary alarm and undermining confidence in the state's security architecture. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the process.

The Ogun State Police Command also issued a strong warning to content creators, bloggers, social media users and members of the public against creating, publishing or recirculating unverified security-related information. The Command stressed that individuals found spreading false security alerts or misinformation would face legal consequences.

While acknowledging the concerns of residents who may have been alarmed by the video, the Police reassured the public that Ogun State remains peaceful, safe and secure. Residents were encouraged to continue their lawful activities and rely only on information released through verified official channels.
