NDLEA ARRESTS SOUTH AFRICAN WOMAN SMUGGLING HEROIN WITH CHILD AS COVER, SEIZES ₦10.3BN CANNABIS SHIPMENT AT LAGOS PORT

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its' nationwide offensive against international drug trafficking syndicates with the arrest of a South African woman who allegedly used her three-year-old son as cover to smuggle heroin into Nigeria, alongside the seizure of illicit drugs worth more than ₦10.3 billion at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos.

In a statement released by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Agency disclosed that the operations reflect the sustained determination of the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks through intelligence-led enforcement, strategic partnerships and nationwide anti-drug campaigns.
The South African suspect, Ms. Will Jessica Ann, 38, was arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, after officers discovered 14 large blocks of heroin weighing 5.75 kilograms hidden inside her luggage. She had arrived in Nigeria aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1433 from Doha on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Investigators said the suspect initially denied checking in any luggage until NDLEA officers matched the baggage tags to those attached to her passport. She later admitted ownership of the bags, claiming she had forgotten about them. Intelligence further linked her to a transnational drug trafficking syndicate operating between Cambodia and South Africa, allegedly coordinated with her husband and partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager.

In another operation, NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, arrested 48-year-old commercial motorcycle rider Onyechere Daniel Chinadu after he arrived from Madagascar via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. A search of his backpack uncovered 87 wraps of methamphetamine, while medical observation over three days led to the recovery of 13 additional pellets, bringing the total to 100 wraps weighing 1.715 kilograms. The suspect admitted he had worked as an Okada rider in Lagos for 15 years before being recruited into drug trafficking by a Uganda-based associate identified as Ozor Igo.
The Agency also recorded another major breakthrough at the Apapa Seaport, where officers of the Maritime Intelligence Unit, working alongside the Apapa Strategic Command, the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies, intercepted 4,143.5 kilograms of Canadian Loud concealed in 8,287 nylon bags inside a container imported from Canada. The shipment, valued at over ₦10.3 billion, had been under weeks of intelligence-driven surveillance from its point of departure in Montreal before its eventual interception during a joint examination on Friday, July 10, 2026.

Separately, NDLEA operatives attached to the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) thwarted an attempt to export 2.5 kilograms of skunk concealed inside a gas compressor destined for Cyprus through a Lagos courier company.
Beyond enforcement, the Agency continued its' War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign across the country, reaching students and communities through sensitisation programmes at Nnodo Secondary School, Abakaliki; Government Girls Secondary School, Sabon Gida, Kano; Royal Jesuit College, Agbado Ekiti; Community Secondary School, Idofa, Ogun State; while officials of Zone 14 Command paid a WADA advocacy visit to Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended officers of the DOGI, MMIA, NAIA, Maritime Intelligence Unit and Apapa Commands for the successful arrests and seizures. He urged personnel across all formations to sustain the momentum in reducing drug supply while strengthening drug demand reduction through continuous public sensitization and community engagement.
