OGUN POLICE UNVEIL GRASSROOTS POCACOV CAMPAIGN TO CURB CULTISM AND SOCIAL VICES

For the Ogun State Police Command, the campaign against crime is no longer confined to patrol vehicles, investigations and courtroom prosecutions. It is increasingly being fought in classrooms, neighbourhoods and community halls, where prevention is viewed as the first line of defence. That philosophy took centre stage with the official launch of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) in Ogun State, a grassroots initiative designed to steer young people away from cultism, substance abuse and other social vices through advocacy, mentorship and public engagement.

According to a statement released by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the formal rollout reflects the Command's commitment to the preventive policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, by strengthening community-based interventions that address the root causes of crime. The initiative places strong emphasis on public sensitization, behavioural reorientation and youth engagement as sustainable complements to conventional law enforcement.
The programme was formally inaugurated at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters in Abeokuta during a strategic executive briefing between the Command leadership and the state executives of POCACOV. The delegation, led by State Coordinator ASP Oluborode Opeyemi and State Chairman Aare Olayinka Aturamu, presented a comprehensive overview of the campaign's achievements, operational structure and expansion plans for communities across Ogun State.

The engagement offered a detailed assessment of POCACOV's non-kinetic policing framework, highlighting its' focus on early intervention, youth mentorship, community enlightenment and behavioural change rather than relying solely on reactive policing measures. The presentation also reviewed the campaign's grassroots successes while outlining an ambitious roadmap for broader statewide sensitization programmes aimed at reducing youth vulnerability to criminal influences.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni endorsed the initiative, describing preventive engagement as an indispensable pillar of modern policing. He applauded the commitment demonstrated by the POCACOV leadership and encouraged the team to broaden its' reach, deepen community partnerships and sustain its' advocacy in schools, neighbourhoods and public spaces across the state.
