FOREIGN NATIONAL LINKED TO ALLEGED ₦13.5m BABY DEAL AS NAPTIP RAIDS RIVERS FACILITY

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), working with the Rivers State Ministry of Health, has sealed a suspected illegal maternity facility in Port Harcourt and arrested three people over an alleged child trafficking and baby-sale operation.

In a statement signed by NAPTIP’s Head of Press and Public Relations Unit, Vincent Adekoye, the agency said the operation followed actionable intelligence on a suspected network involved in the procurement, sale and unlawful transfer of children.

The facility, located in the Elelenwo area of Port Harcourt, was allegedly operating from a residential apartment. NAPTIP said the arrests included the facility’s owner, an alleged facilitator in the suspected baby sale and another staff member.

Preliminary investigations have raised concerns over the involvement of a Liberian national residing in Belgium who reportedly arrived in Nigeria without evidence of pregnancy but allegedly took custody of three children within about a month.

NAPTIP is investigating claims that about ₦13.5 million changed hands in connection with the transfer of the three children. Investigators are working to establish the children’s identities, whereabouts, welfare and biological and legal parentage, while tracing financial transactions linked to the alleged deal.
The agency is also examining the possible involvement of medical personnel and others who may have facilitated the suspected trafficking operation.

NAPTIP Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, said the agency had intensified surveillance of maternity and healthcare facilities suspected of operating as illegal adoption or baby-trafficking centres.

The maternity has been sealed to preserve evidence while investigations continue. NAPTIP said anyone found culpable would face prosecution in accordance with the law, while the safety and welfare of the children remain its priority.

The agency urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child trafficking, illegal adoption, baby selling and other forms of exploitation to its commands nationwide.
