IGP DISU CHARGES FOR POSITIVE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD NIGERIA

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace responsible digital citizenship and reject the use of social media to spread misinformation, hate, intimidation and content capable of threatening national peace and security.

IGP Disu made the call at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue organised by the Nigeria Police Force to mark International Youth Day 2026, themed “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” alongside the campaign “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”

The IGP warned that conflict is increasingly moving from the streets to digital platforms, with misinformation, disinformation, cyberbullying, impersonation, deepfakes, hate speech and coordinated online attacks capable of triggering real-world violence and undermining trust in democratic institutions.
He stressed that young Nigerians must understand that their actions online have consequences beyond the digital space. As Nigeria approaches another electoral season, he urged youths to resist attempts by political actors and other interests to use social media to manipulate public opinion or deepen existing divisions.

Disu called on young people to verify information before sharing it, establish facts before publishing allegations and consider the impact of their online actions on others.

The IGP said the Nigeria Police Force wants young Nigerians to be partners in preventing cybercrime and promoting responsible digital behaviour, rather than engaging only after digital offences have occurred.
He called for stronger collaboration among the Police, youths, schools, parents, technology companies, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to improve digital literacy, critical thinking and online responsibility.

With young Nigerians wielding enormous influence through technology, business, social media and public advocacy, Disu urged them to use that influence to promote innovation, dialogue, truth and national unity.

His message was summed up in three simple principles: Think before you click. Verify before you share. Pause before you post.
The IGP urged Nigerian youths to choose responsible citizenship over digital intimidation and use their digital voices to build Nigeria, not burn it.
