IGP DISU URGES YOUTHS TO TURN CREATIVITY, TECHNOLOGY INTO NATIONAL STRENGTH

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has asked Nigerian youths to rethink the role they play in the country’s security and political life, arguing that their influence can either deepen Nigeria’s problems or help solve them.

IGP Disu made the appeal at a National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue organised by the Nigeria Police Force as part of activities marking International Youth Day 2026.
The event, held under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” also featured the campaign “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”
Rather than presenting young Nigerians only as a group vulnerable to crime and political manipulation, the Inspector-General described them as a powerful force capable of influencing the direction of the country.

He pointed to their growing role in technology, business, community organizing, public discourse and civic engagement. With the right choices, he said, young Nigerians can become important drivers of national development.

The Inspector General warned against allowing political interests, criminal networks or other individuals to turn youthful energy into an instrument for violence and destruction. He encouraged young people to be deliberate about where they invest their time, talents and influence.
The choices, he said, should favour education, enterprise, innovation, creativity, public service and peaceful participation in democratic processes.

The Police initiative is also intended to change how the Force engages with young Nigerians. Instead of focusing only on enforcement, the IGP said the Police wants stronger partnerships with youths in areas such as community safety, violence prevention, cybercrime awareness, protection of vulnerable people and responsible use of digital platforms.

The approach places security within a wider national responsibility. Government agencies, businesses, civil society organisations, communities and young Nigerians all have roles to play in creating an environment where violence and criminality are less attractive options.

IGP Disu also urged youths to think beyond immediate rewards and consider the long-term consequences of their actions. Political influence, social media popularity or financial gain may be temporary, while the effects of decisions made during formative years can last much longer.

He further stated that the youths should not wait for others to define their future. They should use their education, creativity, technology and entrepreneurial abilities to create opportunities, strengthen their communities and contribute to national development.
