IGP URGES NIGERIAN YOUTHS TO REJECT MANIPULATION, CHOOSE NATION BUILDING

Nigeria’s future will be shaped by its'  young population, but the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, says that future depends on the choices youths make today.

Speaking at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue to mark International Youth Day 2026, IGP Disu urged young Nigerians to move beyond being passive recipients of government policies and become active participants in national development.
The event, organised by the Nigeria Police Force, was held under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, alongside the campaign “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”

IGP Disu argued that Nigeria stands to gain significantly from a generation equipped with education, technology, enterprise and civic responsibility. The alternative, he warned, is a youth population vulnerable to political manipulation, criminality, violence and destructive behaviour online.

The approaching 2027 elections make the issue particularly pressing. Political competition can create opportunities for young people to participate in democracy, but it can also expose them to recruitment for violence. IGP Disu urged youths to resist becoming instruments in political contests whose consequences they may be left to endure long after the politicians have moved on.

He also called for greater youth involvement in entrepreneurship, technology, community development and public policy. Their influence, he said, should be used to solve problems rather than deepen them.
The Police Force is seeking to position young Nigerians as partners in security, including efforts to prevent violence, combat cybercrime, protect vulnerable people and promote responsible digital citizenship.

That partnership, IGP Disu stressed, cannot succeed through policing alone. Government institutions, communities, businesses, civil society and young Nigerians must share responsibility for creating a safer country.
