IGP WARNS POLITICIANS NOT TO WEAPONIZE YOUTHS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Inspector General Of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is putting political actors on notice, against recruiting, financing, arming or provoking youths for electoral violence as it will not be treated as legitimate political activity.

The warning came during the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue, organised by the Nigeria Police Force to mark International Youth Day 2026. The event was held under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, alongside the campaign “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery.”

The Inspector-General said political rivalries should never turn young Nigerians into disposable foot soldiers. Elections end, political opponents can reconcile and alliances can shift. The consequences of violence, however, can remain with victims, families and communities for years.

The Inspector General said that the Nigeria Police Force also drew a clear boundary between political participation and criminal behaviour. Nigerians have the right to support candidates, campaign and express political opinions peacefully. That right does not extend to carrying weapons, attacking opponents, intimidating voters or destroying property.

IGP Disu said enforcement would apply regardless of party, candidate or political affiliation.

He also placed responsibility on young Nigerians themselves. The Police urged them to reject offers that could draw them into violence, intimidation or politically motivated criminality and instead use their energy in ways that create opportunities and strengthen their communities.

The Nigeria Police Force is calling on political parties, candidates and campaign organizations to engage youths as partners in national development and allow them to contribute through leadership, enterprise, technology and civic participation.
