OGUN POLICE REACTIVATE OPERATION VELVET, BEGIN STATEWIDE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

The Ogun State Police Command has reactivated Operation VELVET across the state, stepping up enforcement against traffic violations that threaten road safety, disrupt traffic flow and create opportunities for criminal activity.

According to a statement released by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the operation follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and forms part of a broader intelligence-led strategy to improve safety and order along Ogun’s major highways and transit corridors.

The enforcement will target one-way driving, reckless and dangerous driving, unauthorised emergency sirens, and vehicles with missing, altered or concealed number plates. Police will also focus on unlicensed drivers, overloading and indiscriminate parking that obstructs traffic.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of operational units to ensure the exercise is carried out effectively across all 20 local government areas. Personnel are expected to enforce the law firmly while respecting the rights of motorists and other road users.

The Commissioner also drew a sharp line between enforcement and abuse of authority. Officers have been warned against extortion, bribery, harassment, illegal detention and unauthorised seizure of vehicles or documents. Supervisory officers will be held responsible for misconduct by personnel under their command, while offenders will face disciplinary action.

The Command urged motorists, transport operators and fleet owners to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with officers on duty. Motorists were also advised not to offer bribes to evade legitimate sanctions.

The reactivation of Operation VELVET signals a tougher approach to traffic enforcement, but the Police Command says its' success will ultimately depend on balancing firm enforcement with professionalism, accountability and public cooperation.
