POLICE FAMILIES PLANT 50 TREES IN ABUJA, TURN YOUTH DAY INTO A CALL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Fifty young trees went into the ground in Abuja as senior members of the Nigeria Police family turned an International Youth Day activity into a quiet statement about the kind of country future generations should inherit.

The exercise, led by the President of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, was part of the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026 National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative. The 50 seedlings were donated by the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Wives of senior police officers joined Chief Mrs Disu in planting the trees, reinforcing the initiative's central message that responsible citizenship extends beyond policing, politics and public institutions to families and communities.

The participating police families included Mrs Franca Achinyan, Mrs Zainab Isyaku, Mrs Adekemi Fayoade, Mrs Hadiza Shehu Nadada, Mrs Angela Olaiya, Mrs Ada Ene Alonyenu, Mrs Nkiru Oranwusi and Mrs Samuel Etaifo Iyabo.

Beyond the ceremonial photographs and freshly turned soil, the exercise was designed to connect environmental protection with youth development. The organisers presented tree planting as an investment in public health, community wellbeing and the ecological inheritance of generations yet unborn.

Its' message was particularly directed at young Nigerians that securing the future is not confined to preventing crime or maintaining public order. It also means protecting the environment in which that future will unfold.

The initiative further illustrated the reach of collective action. The Federal Ministry of Environment supplied the seedlings, while members of the Police family provided the hands to plant them,  a small collaboration carrying a larger lesson about shared responsibility.

For POWA and the Nigeria Police Force, the trees are intended to stand as living reminders of that responsibility. Each seedling represents an investment in a greener Nigeria and a modest act of stewardship that, with care, can outlive the people who planted it.
The initiative carries the campaign message: Plant Peace. Grow Nigeria. Secure the Future.
