POLICE PUSH PREVENTIVE POLICING WITH NEW BOOK FOR NIGERIAN YOUTHS

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has unveiled Esteemed Youths, a new book aimed at helping young Nigerians understand the consequences of choices that can lead to crime and antisocial behaviour.

Written by ACP Oluseyi Olabisi Okuwobi, the book was unveiled as part of the Nigeria Police Force International Youth Day 2026 National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative.

The event brought together senior police officers, government representatives, members of the Police Officers Wives Association, youth leaders, students and other stakeholders.

A preventive approach to youth crime
Esteemed Youths focuses on issues confronting young Nigerians, including cybercrime, cultism, drug abuse, violence, examination malpractice and other forms of antisocial behaviour.
Rather than relying solely on warnings, the book seeks to help young people understand how their decisions can shape their future. It encourages them to direct their energy and talents towards education, entrepreneurship, innovation, responsible citizenship and community service.

The publication reflects the police force's growing emphasis on preventive policing and stronger engagement with young Nigerians.
It also complements the NPF's youth campaign, “My Future Is Greater Than Political and Digital Thuggery,” which seeks to discourage young people from becoming tools for political violence, cybercrime, cultism, drug abuse and other criminal activities.

The approach places greater emphasis on equipping youths with knowledge and positive alternatives before they are exposed to criminal recruiters, harmful influences or misinformation.

ACP Okuwobi draws on experience in policing, public relations, peace and conflict studies and cybercrime to examine challenges facing young people and present them in a form intended to encourage reflection and better decision-making.

The unveiling formed part of a wider youth programme that included leadership and security discussions, environmental initiatives, youth honours and awards, ambassadorial appointments and other activities designed to strengthen relations between the police and young Nigerians.

The President of the Police Officers Wives Association, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, senior police officers, government representatives, youth leaders, students and development partners were among those who attended the event.

Marked “Not for Sale,” Esteemed Youths is being distributed through the Office of the Inspector-General of Police as a public-interest resource rather than a commercial publication.

The police are encouraging parents, schools, community leaders and youth organisations to use the book as a tool for value education and crime prevention.

The broader objective is to help young Nigerians see that their choices have consequences and that education, creativity, enterprise and responsible citizenship offer a stronger path to the future.
