POLICE VOW TO PROTECT PEACEFUL POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AHEAD OF 2027

The Nigeria Police Force says Nigerians should be able to participate in the country’s political process without fear, as preparations begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This assurance was given by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue, organised by the Force to mark International Youth Day 2026.

The police, he said, will protect citizens who take part in lawful political activities, support peaceful campaigns and provide security for candidates, campaign venues and public spaces.

The Force intends to draw a distinction between legitimate political activity and conduct that threatens lives, property or the electoral process. Violence, voter intimidation, attacks on opponents, destruction of property and the use of weapons in political activities will not be treated as expressions of political rights.

The IGP also warned against the use of young Nigerians as instruments of electoral violence. Young people, he noted, frequently bear the lasting consequences of conflicts that political actors may eventually move beyond.

The Inspector-General encouraged youths to remain active in politics but to channel their influence into constructive civic participation and national development.

He also stressed that securing peaceful elections cannot be left to the police alone. Political parties and candidates, voters, civil society groups, government institutions and communities all have a role in preventing violence and protecting Nigeria’s democratic space.

As the 2027 elections approach, the Police Force is positioning itself as both a protector of lawful political participation and an enforcer against criminal conduct carried out under the guise of politics.

The objective, is to create an electoral environment in which Nigerians can support candidates, express political opinions and make their choices without intimidation or violence.
