SIX ARRESTED AS OGUN POLICE UNCOVER SUSPECTED BABY-TRAFFICKING OPERATION IN MOWE

A police operation in Mowe, Ogun State, has uncovered a suspected baby-trafficking operation, with six people arrested, two pregnant women and four children rescued and investigators searching for a newborn whose whereabouts remain unknown.

According to a statement released by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the operation was carried out on August 24 by officers of the Mowe Division following sustained intelligence on alleged human trafficking and illegal adoption activities at a facility in Abaren Village.

Police operatives raided the suspected hideout at Toluwalase Street, via Gbarinmole, around 8 a.m., rescuing two pregnant women identified as Ilesanmi Foluke, 23, who was seven months pregnant and Ejekwa Melody, 20, who was eight months pregnant. Four children, two boys and two girls, were also found at the location.

Six suspects were arrested in connection with the operation. They were identified as Florence Glory Ogbona, 58; Magdalene Julius, 63; Chidike Egwuonwu, 40; Onyechu Chidike, 35; Stephen Ogbona, 39; and an attending nurse, Oseni Kusamotu Idaya.

The investigation took another turn when detectives traced the operation to a hospital in the Mowe area. There, police found 26-year-old Blessing Bright Effiong receiving treatment after giving birth to a baby boy on August 20. The newborn, however, could not be accounted for, prompting the arrest of the nurse as investigators intensified efforts to locate the child.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where detectives are expected to establish the wider network behind the suspected operation, locate the missing baby and determine the culpability of those arrested.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni commended the Mowe operatives for the intelligence-led operation and reaffirmed the Command's determination to disrupt human trafficking, child exploitation and related crimes across Ogun State.
