The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted more than 1.3 million pills and capsules of tramadol and other opioids, seized about 6,000kg of cannabis and arrested several suspects, including a man accused of impersonating a senior police officer to move drugs through checkpoints.

In a statement released Sunday by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA said the operations across Lagos, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and the Federal Capital Territory produced drug seizures with a combined street value of more than N3.4 billion.

Among the major seizures was 603.75kg of Canadian Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis valued at N1.81 billion. The consignment was intercepted at Tin-Can Island Port, Lagos, after NDLEA operatives placed a 40-foot container from Montreal, Canada, under surveillance. A joint examination with Customs and other security agencies on Sept. 16 uncovered 1,200 parcels hidden inside 31 black jumbo bags loaded into two Toyota Sienna vehicles.

The seizure led to the arrest of 49-year-old Innocent Ekpe along the Benin-Onitsha expressway in Asaba, Delta State. NDLEA said Ekpe was carrying 292.48kg of skunk in a silver Toyota Sienna and had allegedly posed as Godwin Emeka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, using a forged identification card to avoid scrutiny at checkpoints. His alleged accomplice, 39-year-old Nduka Joseph, was also arrested.

In Edo, NDLEA officers arrested 45-year-old Matthew Ossai at an auto-repair workshop on Agbor Road, Benin City, which investigators said was being used as a drug storage front. Officers recovered 48kg of Canadian Loud, 152 grams of methamphetamine and a metal box used to store the substances.

On the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in Niger State, officers arrested Bashir Usman, 20, Abubakar Nuhu, 18, and Abdulrahman Abdulwahab, 18, with two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles, a magazine, a locally made pistol with magazine and nine rounds of 9mm ammunition concealed in a travel bag.

Along the Abaji-Abuja highway, Aminu Isyaku, 23, and Jamilu Habibu, 25, were arrested with more than 1.1 million assorted tramadol tablets and capsules, codeine syrup, methamphetamine and Exol tablets concealed in eight sacks being transported from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

Other Lagos operations produced 48,900 Tramadol 225mg pills from the residence of Onyeka Ofor in Aguda, Surulere, while 59kg of cannabis was intercepted at a logistics company, leading to the arrest of Luke Ugokwe. At Apongbo, Ibrahim Hudu, 43, was arrested with 998.38kg of nitrous oxide gas.

In Gombe, Sabi'u Umar, 27 and Hassana Muhammad, 19, were arrested with 154,480 tramadol capsules at Barunde and Gombe main market. Imo officers also arrested Ifesinachi Godwin, 25, with 43.85kg of skunk along the Owerri-Onitsha road.

In Ondo State, four suspects , Blessing Effiong, Saviour Peter, David Friday Sunday and Ability Peter Sunday  were arrested during the raid and destruction of a two-hectare cannabis farm in Ita-Ogbolu forest. About 5,000kg of cannabis plants were destroyed, while 48kg of dry and fresh cannabis was recovered for prosecution.

The NDLEA also continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign with sensitisation programmes at St. Ferdinand School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State; Unizik Secondary School, Awka, Anambra State; Scholars Nursery and Primary School, Epe, Lagos; and Government Technical Training School, Jalingo, Taraba State. The Delta Ports Command also paid a WADA advocacy visit to His Royal Majesty, King Couple Mackson Oromoni Mobene III, Pere Ama-Okosu of Ogbe-Ijoh Warri Kingdom, Delta State.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), commended the Lagos, Tincan, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and FCT Commands for their intelligence-driven operations and urged personnel nationwide to maintain the agency's balanced approach to drug control.
