The future of Nigeria will be shaped by the values citizens uphold and the decisions leaders make today, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, has said, urging Nigerians to embrace integrity, discipline and responsible citizenship as the country marks its' 66th Independence Anniversary.

Ojajuni made the call on Thursday at a symposium organised by the International Friendship League (IFL) at the Presidential Conference Hall of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The event, themed “Nigeria at 66: A Call to Citizenship Transformation,” brought together professionals, academics and other stakeholders to examine the country’s leadership, national values and development prospects.

Drawing on his experience in policing and public service, the commissioner emphasised the importance of making decisions with future generations in mind. He said national progress depends on citizens preserving the lessons of the past while building a society anchored in knowledge, service, respect and personal accountability.

Ojajuni stressed that meaningful change must begin with individuals before extending to leadership, public institutions and the wider society. He also highlighted the need to preserve knowledge and national values, ensuring that the experiences of one generation remain useful to those who follow.

He commended the IFL for creating a platform for reflection on citizenship and national development, urging Nigerians to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to the country and recognise their role in shaping its' future.
