The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, has received the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abeokuta Branch, at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, with discussions centred on police accountability, alleged extortion and the protection of fundamental rights.
The October 20 meeting brought together CP Ojajuni, NBA Abeokuta Branch Chairman Chief Kayode Aderemi and members of the branch’s executive committee. The lawyers raised concerns about judgment enforcement, alleged extortion by police officers and remand proceedings, while pledging continued cooperation with the Command.
CP Ojajuni emphasized that disagreements between the police and the Bar could strengthen accountability when managed through professionalism, civility and respect for the law. He stressed the importance of verifying court judgments before taking police action and complying with legal requirements in remand proceedings.
On allegations of extortion and misconduct, the commissioner reaffirmed his zero-tolerance position, urging lawyers and members of the public to report errant officers through established channels, including the X-Squad and Complaint Response Unit. He also cautioned against frivolous petitions that turn civil disputes into criminal matters, procedural shortcuts and legal advice that encourages clients to disregard lawful police invitations. Aderemi undertook to address the concerns raised within the association.
To prevent professional disagreements from escalating into prolonged confrontations, Ojajuni announced a joint follow-up committee comprising representatives of the Command and the NBA branch. The committee is expected to provide a formal channel for dialogue, monitor outstanding complaints and facilitate the resolution of disputes.
