DREDGERS ASSOCIATION DENIES EXTORTION CLAIMS AGAINST LAGOS COMMISSIONER, DISOWNS ONLINE REPORT

By Jennifer Nwosu

The Dredgers Association of Nigeria (DAN) has disowned an online report alleging that Lagos Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development Ekundayo Alebiosu and an official identified as Cardozo extorted dredgers and tipper operators, saying the publication was not authorised by the association.

In a statement released by the National President, Batare Akpomejero, and National Secretary, Richard Ntan, the association said neither its national leadership nor any authorised organ issued a petition or press release accusing the officials of harassment, intimidation or extortion.

The disclaimer follows a report published by Linda Ikeji’s Blog and other online platforms on October 23, 2026, alleging that the association had appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene over alleged extortion involving dredging operators.

DAN said it had no record of the reported seizure of trucks or a demand for ₦500,000, adding that it completely dissociated itself from the allegations and urged the public, the state government and other stakeholders to disregard the report as a statement made on its behalf.

The association also described its relationship with the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development as cordial and collaborative.

On disputes concerning dredging regulations and the interpretation of Supreme Court judgments on shoreline authority, DAN said it was pursuing discussions through established institutional channels and engagement with relevant federal and state authorities rather than through public confrontations.

The association expressed regret over any embarrassment or reputational damage the publication may have caused the Lagos State Government, Alebiosu and other officials mentioned.

It reaffirmed its' commitment to lawful and sustainable dredging operations and continued engagement with government authorities to address issues affecting the industry.
