NAPTIP RECEIVES 105 NIGERIANS REPATRIATED FROM CYBERCRIME SYYNDICATES IN GHANA

Nigeria has received 105 citizens rescued during a coordinated crackdown on cybercrime operations in Ghana, highlighting the growing intersection between transnational crime, human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable job seekers. The returnees are expected to undergo profiling, welfare assessments and reintegration processes as authorities work to establish their individual circumstances and determine the support they require.

In a statement released by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Vincent Adekoye, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) said the operation was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) following a report from Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority. NAPTIP led a team of Nigerian security and law enforcement agencies in the operation, which resulted in the rescue of 119 Nigerians, with 105 repatriated and the remaining 14 undergoing processing in Ghana.

The operation involved the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency, the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, alongside other partners.

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Binta Lami Adamu Bello, OON, received the returnees on behalf of the Nigerian government and assured them of their safety. She urged them to remain calm while the authorities conduct profiling and make arrangements for their reintegration.
The agency said the process would focus on protecting the dignity and welfare of the survivors, recognising that individuals rescued from suspected criminal operations may have different experiences and support needs. The assessments are expected to guide decisions on appropriate assistance and further intervention.

NAPTIP credited the success of the operation to cooperation between Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities, with particular recognition for Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency. The agency also acknowledged the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Nigerian security and law enforcement agencies involved in coordinating the response.

The agency reaffirmed its' commitment to strengthening domestic and international partnerships against human trafficking and related forms of exploitation, while ensuring that people identified during enforcement operations receive appropriate screening, protection and support.
