The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) are exploring stronger collaboration to combat smuggling, intercept prohibited goods and improve security operations across Lagos and the South West.
The initiative emerged during a courtesy visit by Comptroller Oladapo Olukayode Afeni, Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, to the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of LSSTF, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan, at the Fund’s office in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Ogunsan expressed the Fund’s readiness to explore areas of cooperation, particularly in equipment, logistics and operational support. He stressed that effective security required contributions from all relevant agencies, noting that Customs enforcement played an important role in preventing prohibited goods from reaching communities and disrupting criminal activities.
He also highlighted the deterrent effect of visible enforcement operations, noting that the presence of Customs officers could discourage unlawful conduct and promote compliance with the law.
Afeni said the FOU Zone A was responsible for anti-smuggling operations across the South West, with its headquarters in Lagos. He expressed confidence that closer cooperation with the LSSTF would strengthen enforcement efforts and support the shared goal of improving security across the region.
The Customs comptroller also commended Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for his leadership and commitment to border security and the fight against smuggling.
The proposed partnership underscores the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing security challenges, protecting critical infrastructure and safeguarding residents and businesses across Lagos and the South West.
