The trail of a ₦2.5 million online trading scam has led Ogun State police detectives to Lagos, where a 45-year-old man, Tony Ameachi, was arrested and 25 ATM cards, 25 mobile phones and 16 SIM cards recovered in an investigation into alleged fraud.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the case stemmed from an online advertisement for deep freezers posted in April 2026. The complainant, a trader who buys and resells the appliances, reportedly transferred ₦2.5 million to a bank account bearing the name Abdulmoruf Abdulahi after negotiating the purchase. The goods never arrived, and the seller allegedly became unreachable.
The complainant reported the matter at Igbesa Police Division on April 4, prompting an investigation that eventually led detectives to the Ojo area of Lagos, where Ameachi was arrested on September 22. Police said a search during the operation yielded the phones, ATM cards and SIM cards, which are now being examined as investigators pursue possible links to other fraudulent transactions.
Preliminary findings suggest the suspect allegedly collected utility bills and newly registered SIM cards from associates, who were asked to use the documents to open bank accounts. The ATM cards were then reportedly handed to him for transactions suspected to be connected to fraudulent activities. Police are working to establish the extent of the alleged scheme, identify other people involved and determine whether additional victims were affected.
Ameachi, the case file and recovered items have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation. Police said he would be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.
The command urged the public to verify online sellers before making payments, confirm the identity of account holders and retain transaction records. It also cautioned against sharing ATM cards, SIM cards, bank details or personal documents with people whose activities cannot be independently verified.
