The Ogun State Police Command has pledged stronger security support for petroleum distribution facilities, gas installations and compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure as it moves to curb vandalism, theft and other threats to the state’s energy sector.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, gave the assurance during a meeting with the State Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Dr Atilola Simeon Akinyemi and members of the authority’s management team at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the discussions focused on intelligence sharing, operational coordination and protecting strategic energy assets across Ogun State.
Akinyemi outlined the authority’s regulatory responsibilities under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, emphasising the importance of cooperation with security agencies to enforce compliance, protect investments and sustain petroleum operations. He also acknowledged the police command’s existing support and sought closer collaboration on regulatory and security matters.
Ojajuni identified vandalism, theft and illegal operations as threats to critical infrastructure, with potential consequences for public safety and economic stability. Drawing on his previous operational experience with the regulatory framework of the then Department of Petroleum Resources in Yola, Adamawa State, he stressed the role of effective policing in deterring economic sabotage and supporting lawful business activities.
The commissioner assured the NMDPRA delegation that the command would provide appropriate assistance within its legal mandate, while strengthening intelligence sharing and cooperation with relevant stakeholders. He also highlighted the importance of energy infrastructure protection to investor confidence and industrial development in Ogun State.
The police urged petroleum operators and members of the public to report suspicious activities around energy facilities through established security channels, reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting critical assets and supporting legitimate economic activity.
