Five suspects have been arraigned before the Ota Magistrate Court following an attack on police officers during a patrol around The Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, in which officers were injured and a suspect in custody escaped.

In a statement released by the DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the command said the confrontation occurred on October 2 after a patrol team intercepted a suspect allegedly carrying a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The officers were taking the handcuffed suspect to the station when a group allegedly descended on the patrol team with cutlasses, stones and bottles. The attack reportedly left some officers injured, damaged the police vehicle and enabled the suspect to flee.

An intelligence-led operation following the incident resulted in the arrest of Morenikeji Badmus, 36, Adedoja Segun, 40, Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49, Mike Stephen, 28, and David Odeh, 32.

The five suspects were arraigned on charges including conspiracy, alleged serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. Police said efforts are continuing to locate other suspects believed to have taken part in the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, said the command would continue to protect officers carrying out legitimate duties and urged residents to resolve grievances through lawful channels rather than physical confrontation.
