TINUBU BACKS TOURISM REFORMS, RECEIVES NIHOTOUR’s HIGHEST HONOUR

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his support for reforms in Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality industry, as the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) seeks to strengthen professional standards, develop industry skills and improve service delivery.

The president made the commitment during a meeting with NIHOTOUR Director-General and Chief Executive Officer Aare Abisoye Fagade in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Fagade briefed him on ongoing reforms, including efforts to implement the NIHOTOUR Act 2022 and establish stronger professional and regulatory standards across the sector.

During the meeting, Fagade presented Tinubu with the Grand Fellow of National Hospitality and Tourism (GFNHT), described by the institute as the highest individual honour in Nigeria’s tourism sector.

The reforms aim to improve the competence of hospitality professionals, strengthen accountability and create a more competitive environment for tourism businesses and investors. The sector is also seen as a potential source of employment, enterprise development and revenue as Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy beyond oil.

Fagade said tourism should be treated as an economic sector capable of generating jobs, attracting investment and contributing to national development, rather than being viewed solely as an avenue for leisure and recreation.

He said NIHOTOUR was working to establish the professional and institutional foundations needed to translate Nigeria’s tourism potential into sustainable economic opportunities.

The engagement aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises economic diversification, job creation and the development of non-oil sectors.

NIHOTOUR said it would continue working with government institutions and private-sector stakeholders to improve industry standards and position Nigeria as a more competitive destination for tourism and hospitality investment.
