The Ogun State Police Command has received three honours at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council’s Golden Jubilee Press Week, with the awards recognising its' public safety efforts, the leadership of Commissioner of Police,CP Bode Ojajuni and the Command’s media engagement.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, on November 2, the Command said it received the Shield of Public Safety Award, while Ojajuni was named a Golden Jubilee Ambassador and Babaseyi received the Vanguard of Public Safety Award.
The week-long celebration, held from October 26 to November 1, coincided with Ogun State’s 50th anniversary and centred on the theme of truth, trust and the press in protecting democratic choice and rebuilding public confidence in journalism.
Ojajuni participated in a panel discussion where he stressed the importance of factual reporting, professional ethics and patriotism, highlighting the media’s role in public accountability and national development.
At the grand finale, the Command’s Shield of Public Safety Award recognised its policing strategies and efforts to protect lives and property. Ojajuni attributed the Command’s operational progress, particularly under Operation KOSAYE, to the strategic direction of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu and the Handshake Patrol initiative.
He said Operation KOSAYE was carried out through cooperation between the Ogun and Lagos police commands, with support from both state governments. The collaboration, he noted, had strengthened cross-border security coordination and efforts to counter criminal activity.
Ojajuni was among 50 distinguished personalities named Golden Jubilee Ambassadors. His recognition followed years of service in Ogun, including previous roles as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department and Squadron Commander of the 16 Police Mobile Force in Abeokuta.
Babaseyi’s Vanguard of Public Safety Award acknowledged his work in police communication, media relations and public safety advocacy.
The commissioner dedicated the honours to the Inspector-General of Police and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, crediting their commitment and sacrifices to the Command’s work. He also acknowledged the NUJ Ogun State Council, led by Chairman Wale Olanrewaju, for promoting engagement between journalists and security institutions.
The awards place renewed emphasis on a relationship that extends beyond press statements and official briefings. For the police, credible communication and public confidence are important complements to operational work, while journalists remain central to informing communities and scrutinising public institutions.
The Command reaffirmed its' commitment to professional policing and sustained cooperation with the media in support of crime prevention, public enlightenment and community safety.
