NDLEA ARRESTS CHINESE NATIONAL, MULTIPLE SUSPECTS; SEIZES N2.1 Billion OPIOID SHIPMENT FROM INDIA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),  has intensified surveillance at the country’s airports and border corridors following a series of high profile interceptions involving synthetic cannabis, cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids valued in the billions of naira.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency disclosed that a 63-year-old Chinese national, Ting Hung Kiong, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, into Nigeria. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig General Mohamed Buba Marwa(Rtd), commended officers involved in the operations and urged commands nationwide to sustain the agency’s aggressive operational momentum.

According to investigators, the suspect, who reportedly resides in Malaysia as a caregiver, travelled from Malaysia to Thailand before flying into Lagos through Dubai aboard an Emirates flight. Authorities said the illicit consignment was concealed inside two large suitcases allegedly handed to her at a Thai airport for delivery in Nigeria.

The agency also announced the seizure of 1,825,710 tablets of Tapentadol 250mg valued at more than N2.1 billion at the Lagos airport import shed. NDLEA operatives had reportedly monitored the shipment after its' arrival from India aboard an Emirates Cargo flight before the consignment was formally handed over by the Nigeria Customs Service.

At the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, operatives intercepted Onyeka Valentine Emeka arriving from Sierra Leone through Addis Ababa. Officials said the suspect later excreted 185.36 grams of cocaine after being placed under observation.

In Abuja, a 29-year-old building engineer, Babatunde Prosper Afekhide, was arrested while preparing to board a flight to Milan via Addis Ababa. NDLEA officers recovered more than 10,000 opioid pills concealed in foil paper and hidden inside luggage.

Additional interceptions at a Lagos courier company uncovered MDMA concealed inside bicycle accessories bound for the Netherlands, while tramadol consignments hidden in soap and body cream containers were traced to destinations in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Operations in Edo, Kano, Lagos border communities and Ekiti states also led to the recovery of large quantities of skunk and the arrests of suspects including Isah Sani and Ogundana Adebayo Julius.

Alongside the enforcement drive, the agency said its' War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign continued across schools and communities nationwide, reflecting what officials describe as a dual strategy of interdiction and prevention in the fight against narcotics trafficking and substance abuse.
