Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency has intercepted one of the largest cannabis shipments recorded this year, seizing over four tonnes of “Canadian Loud” concealed inside vehicles at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos. The operation underscores increasing concerns among authorities that international trafficking syndicates are intensifying efforts to use Nigeria’s ports as entry corridors for high potency synthetic cannabis.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency disclosed that the shipment weighed 4,173.5 kilograms and carried an estimated street value of N10.4 billion. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig General Mohamed Buba Marwa(Rtd), said the seizure highlights the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven collaboration between Nigerian authorities and international partners in disrupting global drug supply chains.

According to the agency, the container was tracked for more than two months after leaving Toronto, Canada on March 28. Investigators said the consignment moved by rail to Montreal before being shipped through Morocco’s Tanger Med Port and eventually routed to Lagos aboard separate cargo vessels. NDLEA’s Marine Intelligence Unit and the Tincan Island Strategic Command reportedly maintained surveillance throughout the journey in collaboration with the United Kingdom Home Office International Operations, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The shipment was intercepted during a joint inspection involving NDLEA operatives, the Nigeria Customs Service, and other security agencies on May 12. Authorities said the drugs were professionally concealed inside a used Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300 vehicle packed within the container.

Speaking during the formal handover of the seized consignment, the NDLEA’s Director of Seaports Operations, ACG Ibinabo ArchieAbia described the operation as evidence of the value of inter-agency cooperation and international intelligence sharing in combating organized crime.

The seizure comes just days after NDLEA operatives uncovered another large cannabis cache in a Lekki mansion, where 2,326 kilograms of the same substance valued at over N5.8 billion were recovered. Taken together, the discoveries point to what authorities believe is a coordinated effort by international cartels to flood the Nigerian market with imported cannabis strains.

General Marwa warned that enforcement agencies would continue targeting every link in the trafficking network, stressing that Nigeria would not become a safe corridor for the narcotics trade. He said that there would be no rest until every link in the supply chain is broken. He commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism.
