NDLEA CHARTS NEW COURSE IN NIGERIA'S DRUG WAR

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) used this year's World Drug Day to project a message that extended beyond arrests and seizures, placing innovation, collaboration and prevention at the centre of Nigeria's response to the evolving drug menace.

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Strategic Command, the event gathered security agencies, civil society organisations, partners and the media around the global theme, The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.

Representing the Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Strategic Commander Ahmed Mohammed Tukur described the occasion as a renewed commitment to safeguarding communities from substance abuse and illicit trafficking. He noted that as traffickers adopt increasingly sophisticated methods, the agency continues to strengthen its' intelligence and operational capacity to stay ahead.

The command's performance over the past six months underscored that resolve, with more than nine tonnes of illicit drugs intercepted, 260 suspects arrested and 101 convictions secured.

The conversation, however, reached beyond enforcement. President of the Meljenstin Youth Empowerment Initiative, Hon. Ambassador Chibuzor Patrick Osigwe, urged professionals across every sector to become advocates for responsible conduct, while retired Assistant Controller-General of Narcotics Ibiba Odili highlighted the urgency of protecting Nigeria's youthful population through sustained awareness, stronger partnerships and practical interventions.

The gathering closed with a shared conviction that the fight against drugs will ultimately be won not only through enforcement, but through collective responsibility, public education and a united national resolve.
