NDLEA INTERCEPTS MASSIVE OPIOID SHIPMENT IN TARABA, ARRESTS 75-YEAR OLD DEALER IN EBONYI

The anti-drug campaign in Nigeria, has gathered further momentum as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recorded a series of significant arrests and seizures across several states, disrupting opioid trafficking networks and targeting notorious drug dealers operating in local communities.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency disclosed that a major opioid consignment concealed beneath building materials was intercepted in Taraba State, while several suspects, including a 75-year-old drug dealer and four notorious female traffickers, were arrested in coordinated operations. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers involved in the operations and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug supply chains across the country.

One of the most significant breakthroughs occurred in Taraba State, where NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence intercepted a truck transporting building materials from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Jalingo. During a detailed search at Nukkai Timber Shade, operatives uncovered a hidden stash containing 320,840 capsules of tramadol, 600 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 4,500 pills of Rohypnol and 299 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. A 22-year-old suspect, Buhari Abdullahi, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

In Ebonyi State, operatives arrested 75-year-old Okebe Samuel in Okposi after he was found with 300 grams of skunk packaged in retail sachets allegedly sold to youths within the community. The arrest, according to investigators, underscores the agency’s determination to pursue offenders regardless of age.

In Imo State, officers raided a known drug enclave in Umulolo, Orlu, leading to the arrest of 32-year-old Chioma Okeke and the recovery of eight kilograms of skunk.

A separate sweep across major drug hotspots in Benin City, Edo State, resulted in the arrest of several suspects, including three female dealers. Chioma Igba, 24 and Precious Ozomah, 22, were apprehended at Uyosa with skunk, Loud and methamphetamine. Another suspect, Anita Abraham, 21, was arrested along Agbor Road with quantities of Scottish Loud and regular Loud, while Henry Okey, 43, was arrested at Upper Mission with assorted psychotropic substances.

In Kano State, NDLEA operatives arrested 19-year-old Saifullahi Lawan with 38 kilograms of skunk, while in Gombe State, 28-year-old Ugwu Sabastine Ifebuchi was intercepted with 15,000 capsules of tramadol near Dantiti Plaza in the Tumfure area.

Alongside enforcement activities, the agency continued its' War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy programme in schools and communities across Oyo, Lagos, Anambra, Kano and other states, promoting awareness and prevention among young Nigerians.

Reacting to the latest successes, Marwa praised the resilience and vigilance of officers in Taraba, Ebonyi, Imo, Edo, Kano and Gombe Commands, stressing that NDLEA remains committed to balancing drug supply reduction with public education and prevention efforts. He reiterated that traffickers would continue to face sustained pressure irrespective of age, gender or methods used to conceal illicit substances.
