NDLEA TAKES ALLEGED INTERNATIONAL DRUG SYNDICATE TO COURT OVER MULTI-BILLION-NAIRA METH OPERATION

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arraigned alleged drug kingpin Anochili Innocent, three Mexican nationals and six other suspects before the Federal High Court in Lagos over the discovery of a large-scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratory hidden in the Mowe forest of Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State. The Agency said the operation uncovered 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine with an estimated international street value exceeding ₦480 billion, making it one of the largest illicit drug manufacturing cases ever prosecuted in Nigeria.

In a statement released by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) described the prosecution as a major milestone in Nigeria's fight against organised transnational drug trafficking. He noted that the case reflects the growing attempt by international drug syndicates to establish manufacturing operations in Nigeria while reaffirming the Agency's resolve to dismantle such networks and prosecute all collaborators.

The suspects were arraigned on Friday, July 10, 2026, before Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory, unlawful possession and production of narcotics, financing a drug trafficking organisation, and possession and transportation of precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

The defendants include Anochili Innocent, 63; Juan Carlos Meza Torrero, 49; Nemecio Martinez Felix, 46; Jesus López Valles, 40; Nwankwo Sunday Christian, 41; Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor, 38; Igwe Abuchi Remijus, 43; Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua, 23; Omonughwa Kingsley Orike, 45; and Nwobum Emeka, 59.
According to the NDLEA, coordinated operations conducted between May 16 and 18, 2026, led to the arrest of the suspects. Seven members of the syndicate, including the three Mexican nationals believed to be methamphetamine production specialists, were apprehended inside the fortified laboratory deep within the Mowe forest, while alleged cartel leader Anochili Innocent was arrested simultaneously at his residence in Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos.

Follow-up operations also led investigators to another property linked to the alleged drug baron in Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, where Kingsley Orike Omonughwa was arrested. Officers subsequently raided the residence of Nwobum Emeka, which investigators identified as the syndicate's strategic stash house.

Court documents allege that the defendants conspired between February and May 16, 2026, to establish and operate the clandestine laboratory, transport precursor chemicals including toluene, phenyl-2-propanone (P2P), phenyl acetic acid, acetone and hydrochloric acid; using multiple vehicles and manufacture methamphetamine in violation of the NDLEA Act. Investigators also recovered 358 kilograms of toluene, 1,834 kilograms of hydrochloric acid, 22.5 kilograms of acetone, alongside significant quantities of P2P and phenyl acetic acid from the laboratory.

Anochili Innocent faces an additional charge for allegedly permitting his property to be used for the unlawful production of narcotic drugs.

All ten defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Although the prosecution indicated it was ready to commence trial after serving the defence with proof of evidence on July 3, 2026, defence counsel requested additional time to prepare. Justice Kakaki subsequently ordered that all defendants be remanded at the Lagos Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter to July 16 and July 22, 2026, for hearing of bail applications and continuation of trial.

Marwa said the prosecution demonstrates the Agency's determination to dismantle sophisticated drug trafficking organisations regardless of their international connections, while urging Nigerians to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible intelligence capable of disrupting criminal networks operating across the country.
