DRUG TRAFFICKING RING SUFFERS FRESH BLOW AS NDLEA SEIZES COCAINE BOUND FOR CHINA, ITALY

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its' offensive against drug trafficking with the interception of cocaine consignments cleverly concealed for export to China and Italy, while also recording major arrests and seizures in Rivers, Anambra, Delta, Nasarawa and Zamfara states.

In a statement released by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Agency said the successful operations underscore the sustained intelligence-driven strategy of the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd). The coordinated operations targeted international drug trafficking networks, local drug distribution channels and suspected criminal supply routes across different parts of the country.

According to the Agency, operatives of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) intercepted two separate cocaine consignments at a logistics company in Lagos on July 30, 2026. One shipment contained 250 grams of cocaine factory-fitted into the base of a traditional local mortar destined for China, while another 500 grams of cocaine was concealed inside the false bottom of a backpack prepared for export to Italy.
In Rivers State, NDLEA operatives arrested 38-year-old Ugo Gift Okonkwo, described as a notorious drug dealer, during an intelligence-led operation at Eagle Island in Port Harcourt. The suspect was found with various quantities of cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, swinol, tramadol and codeine syrup, further reinforcing the Agency's efforts to dismantle local drug distribution networks.
In Anambra State, officers intercepted a truck bearing registration number XK 131 BDG at the DMGS Roundabout in Onitsha. The operation led to the seizure of 26,000 bottles of codeine syrup weighing 3,960 kilograms, while the driver, Chinedu Nwanze, 40, was arrested.

Further operations across the country yielded additional seizures. In Delta State, operatives recovered 331.84 kilograms of skunk from a Toyota Sienna bus along the Kwale-Ughelli Expressway. In Nasarawa State, 64-year-old Joseph Nwaeke was arrested in Karu with 68 kilograms of skunk and 29 grams of methamphetamine.
In Zamfara State, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Zaria-Gusau Highway arrested 27-year-old Sani Umar while transporting 7,400 pills of tramadol 225mg. Preliminary investigations suggest the illicit consignment was intended for criminal elements operating within the region.

Alongside its' enforcement operations, the Agency sustained its' nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign through sensitization programmes in schools, transport hubs and communities across Kano, Oyo and Taraba States, promoting drug prevention and public awareness.
Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) as well as the Rivers, Anambra, Delta, Nasarawa and Zamfara Commands for the successful operations. He urged personnel across the country to remain vigilant and sustain the balanced strategy of aggressive drug supply reduction alongside continuous public education aimed at protecting communities from the dangers of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
