DRUG WAR HAS NO END DATE, MARWA TELLS NDLEA OFFICERS AT 12th AWARDS CEREMONY

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has honoured 274 personnel, 18 high-performing commands and 19 NGOs and media organisations for outstanding contributions to the fight against illicit drugs and substance abuse in Nigeria.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), said the recognition was aimed at encouraging resilience among personnel and partners confronting what he described as a generational challenge.

Marwa spoke on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the 12th Chairman/Chief Executive Officer’s Commendations and Awards ceremony at the Agency’s national headquarters in Abuja. He stressed that the drug war has no fixed end date, as criminal networks continue to adapt by creating new trafficking routes and replacing dismantled cartels.

He said the fight extends beyond enforcement, with NGOs supporting people struggling with addiction and media organisations raising public awareness about trafficking, rehabilitation and recovery. He described the award scheme as the beginning of a tradition that would continue to recognise individuals and organisations making meaningful contributions to the campaign.

Marwa cited recent operations against the Amadi Simon drug cartel, Nigerian-Mexican methamphetamine cartels operating in forests in Ogun and Oyo states and a tramadol network exploiting the Togo-Benin Republic-Nigeria corridor. He said the successes were driven by patient intelligence gathering, international cooperation and the commitment of officers willing to operate in difficult environments.

The NDLEA boss urged personnel to see the award recipients as a standard to aspire to, rather than a ceiling, while encouraging civil society and media partners to treat the recognition as a call for greater commitment.

He congratulated the awardees and commended their families, partners and Nigerians for continuing to support the Agency’s efforts to reduce the impact of drug trafficking and substance abuse across the country.
