N301BN COCAINE, HEROIN, OPIOIDS DESTROYED AS NDLEA STEPS UP WAR ON DRUG CARTELS

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed 329,865.585 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs valued at an estimated N301.06 billion in Lagos, in one of the Agency’s largest court-ordered destruction exercises.

In a statement released by the Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), said the exercise demonstrated Nigeria’s determination to dismantle drug trafficking networks and cut off the financial resources that sustain them.

The destruction took place Monday, August 17, 2026, at Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, following Federal High Court orders covering uncontested concluded cases and abandoned seizures. The drugs included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Canadian Loud, skunk, ephedrine, tramadol, codeine syrup, other opioids and khat.

Of the total quantity destroyed, 246,864.535 kilograms were seized by the Lagos Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026, while 83,001.05 kilograms came from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Tin Can and Apapa Strategic Commands, the Marine Command and a Special Operations Unit.

Marwa said the seizures represented more than the removal of contraband from circulation. He linked illicit drug trafficking to addiction, crime, impaired driving, pressure on healthcare and the loss of productive capacity, while warning that proceeds from the drug trade can also fuel organised crime, terrorism and violent extremism.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the Agency’s mandate and acknowledged the contributions of the Judiciary, Lagos State Government, military, sister security agencies, international partners, civil society, traditional institutions, the media and members of the public.

Marwa also praised NDLEA personnel, particularly those operating in Lagos, for their sacrifices and warned drug barons, financiers, traffickers and distributors that the Agency would continue pursuing their networks and financial assets.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the scale of the destruction as a sobering reminder of the threat posed by illicit drugs, while assuring that Lagos would remain committed to confronting drug abuse and trafficking.

Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi commended the NDLEA, noting that the seizures reflected successful operations across seaports, airports and land borders. He also highlighted the link between illicit drug proceeds and violent non-state actors, including bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers, insurgents and terrorists.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, represented by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, assured the NDLEA of continued naval support for Nigeria’s drug-control efforts.

Marwa urged Nigerians, parents, schools, religious and traditional leaders and the media to remain active partners in the fight against illicit drugs, stressing that the challenge cannot be defeated by law enforcement alone.
